An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test costs a maximum of £54.85, as stipulated by the DVSA (Driver and vehicle Standards Agency - formerly VOSA).
For vehicles that can carry up to eight passengers, a Class 4 MOT test must be undertaken.
For bigger vehicles - such as pick-up trucks and vans weighing between 3.0 and 3.5 tonnes - a Class 7 MOT test must be undertaken.
While £54.85 is the maximum you will be charged, many test centres and garages will do it for less.
Some councils do MOT tests free of charge. Since they do not undertake repairs, there is no vested interest in exaggerating the condition of your vehicle, which might happen in some less scrupulous garages.
While the MOT test is relatively affordable, it is the potential repairs that can be costly - so it’s important to go with a reputable garage (or book a free council test).
A standard motorcycle MOT test (up to 200cc) will cost a maximum of £29.65. For motorcycles with sidecars or bigger engines, the maximum fee is higher.
