An 84-year-old from Gloucestershire has replaced his old Vauxhall Corsa after it was vandalised – because it was bright yellow.
Peter Maddox lives in the picturesque village of Bibury, Glos, known for its 14th Century houses. But his eye-catching motor had some locals and tourists seeing red – because they thought Peter's banana-yellow runabout was a blot on the landscape.
The car was said to have “photo-bombed” tourists’ photos.
Vandals caused £6,000 worth of damage to the outgoing motor and even scratched the word 'MOVE' onto the bonnet.
The dangerously yellow car has since been replaced by an innocuous grey-coloured vehicle – also a Corsa.
The new shade was chosen to avoid any further conflict with the pigment-sensitive locals.
He said: "Yellow is lovely but it doesn't matter."
Peter's daughter-in-law Marie Kraus commented: "He likes having his own car and drove it straight home from the garage. I took a photo of him and he had a big smile and a firm grip on the key.
"Obviously, it is sad to lose the yellow one but he feels he does not want to antagonise anyone with a bright colour. He just wants to drive peacefully.
People from across the country have shown solidarity with Peter and have even organised a Bright Yellow Car Convoy, due to arrive in Bibury on April 1.
Peter will be in attendance to pick his favourite car. Presumably every car has a chance – as long as it’s yellow.
Cash raised at the event will go towards the suitably colourful Butterfly Garden in Cheltenham – a charity close to Peter's heart.
