The large luxury saloon segment is dominated by Germany's Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Those brands have been developing and refining their top end business cars for decades, so why would you choose a British-built alternative?

It's certainly true that Jaguar has its work but out in the face of the Teutonic competition, but according to the latest reviews, the new XJ does pretty well.

Fun if you’re behind the wheel

Both Caranddriver.com and the Telegraph agree that the best seat in an XJ is the driver's. Behind the wheel, this car is a great deal of fun. For those who prefer to be chauffeured around, however, the experience is a little underwhelming. Less space and head room, together with a slightly glitchy infotainment system, means that the XJ's German competition is preferable for back seat drivers.

And despite its size, the XJ doesn’t have a great deal of space for carrying luggage.

Build quality is not quite up to par with comparable German saloons, but the Jaguar is still very much a luxury vehicle, with leather upholstery, glass roof, cruise control, climate control, satellite-navigation and a Bluetooth hands-free telephone set-up across all models, as standard.

Adaptive cruise control, however, is only an option, whichever version you plump for.

Price?

German cars offer better fuel consumption figures than the XJ’s 49.6mpg (especially the BMW 730d’s 60.1mpg), but the Jag costs less to buy in the first instance.

For those in the market for a large luxury saloon, the XJ is a good bet if you like to get behind the wheel yourself. It also ticks the box if you want a car that looks a little more sporty and exciting than those offered by the ruling German auto-marques.
