If anyone needed roadside assistance in the streets surrounding the VW Group Night venue in Geneva yesterday, they may have had to wait a long time. The annual show causes gridlock in the neighbourhood, annoying plenty of well-moneyed Genevans.
But inside, the automotive spectacle was more appealing, with 10 of Volkswagen's 12 brands showing something new to the waiting journalists and auto big-wigs.
The annual gathering showcases the German car giant's forthcoming products.
Here are some of the main highlights:
- A new Volkswagen Touran
- A new Porsche Cayman GT4
- Audi R8 supercar – 2nd generation
- Škoda’s new Superb – without the hatchback/boot of the previous version
- Lamborghini Aventador LP7504 Superveloce (SV)
- Bugatti La Finale
- 160bhp Ducati Multistrada
- The new Volkswagen Caddy
But since VW made these models public some weeks ago, the real surprise was provided by Bentley, with its two door coupe EXP10 Speed Six, which from some angles bears some resemblance to an Aston Martin.
But the flagship VW brand also offered a thrill with a glimpse of the new VW Sports Coupé Concept GTE.
The Audi Prologue was also unveiled, alongside the 20V20 SUV from VW's Spanish brand, SEAT. While outside the firm's usual remit, this sports utility vehicle is a key product for the Iberian marque, as it will be at the forefront of a new range of SUVs.
While the locals may not be fans of the VW Group Show, it nearly always turns up a few interesting products, not least because the group has bought up so many car brands from countries that include Spain, the UK, France, Czech Republic and of course its homeland of Germany.
