A startrescue.co.uk story...

As a leading UK breakdown insurance provider, at startrescue.co.uk we've seen cars sustain damage in innumerable ways – but seldom with consequences as unusual as those seen in Drogheda, Ireland, over the weekend.

A car thief was caught on CCTV as he flung a brick into the passenger window of a parked Mercedes – but the brick rebounded and hit him in the face.

The man had attempted to break the window with a smaller stone, but failed and went off to find the brick.

The owner of the luxury German auto returned with his wife to find the thief lying in a pool of his own blood.

According to the Irish Independent pub owner Gerry Brady said: “When I saw him, he was lying there stone cold on the ground and his face was in ribbons.”

Mr and Mrs Brady though the man had been attacked, but realised what had really happened when the man tried to blackmail them.

Brady said, "He pulled himself up and said he wanted €50 for a taxi. I said, ‘Not a chance, I’ve to pay for a new window, mate.'

"That’s when he leaned in and told me he’d burn me out of the pub."

According to Brady the would-be thief said, “I see you, I know you. I’ll burn you out. I’ll tell the gardas [police] you beat me up. I’ll go to my solicitor.”

Brady went to a petrol station to call the police, who were astonished at what they saw on the CCTV.

Brady said, “You should have heard [them] laughing when they saw the video.”

“They were in stitches.”

Police are continuing their investigations.
